Privacy Policy
The short version: Klip keeps a history of what you copy so you can paste it again. That history is stored on your devices and, if you turn on sync, in your own private iCloud account. Klip connects to websites only to load previews of links you copied and, on Mac, to check this website for a newer version. There are no Klip servers: the developer cannot see anything you copy, and never sells or shares your data.
What Klip stores
To show your clipboard history, Klip saves the items you copy or add (text, rich text, links, images, colors and, on Mac, file references), along with when you copied them and, on Mac, the name of the app you copied from. It also keeps the titles, keywords and pinboards you add, and the page titles and preview images it loads for links.
This is stored on your device: in a database on your Mac, and on iPhone and iPad in the app's own storage, which only Klip and the Klip keyboard can open. You choose how long Klip keeps history, and you can delete any clip, or your whole history, at any time. Deleting the app deletes the history it stored on that device.
Klip never saves passwords. It skips items that apps mark as concealed or transient, which is how most password managers flag copied passwords, and it also skips anything copied from Apple's Passwords app, its menu bar popup, or a browser's built-in password manager.
Klip for iPhone and iPad
The iPhone and iPad app reads your clipboard only when you tap its paste button, and saves what it finds as a new clip. Tapping a clip copies it to your clipboard. The app does not read your clipboard in the background. When iCloud sync is on, it receives silent iCloud notifications only so that it can update when your history changes.
Klip keyboard
The Klip keyboard on iPhone and iPad is optional and off until you turn it on in Klip Settings and add it in iOS Settings. iOS asks you to allow Full Access, which lets the keyboard open your Klip history and copy clips to the clipboard.
- It has no letter keys, and it does not record, store or send anything you type. It only types the clip you tap into the field you're in.
- It can tell that the clipboard has changed without reading it, and reads what's on the clipboard only when you tap its Paste button.
- It does not connect to the internet. Clips you save from the keyboard sync through the Klip app, if you use iCloud sync.
iCloud sync
With iCloud sync, Klip stores your history and pinboards in the private database of your iCloud account using Apple's CloudKit, so they appear on your other Macs, iPhone and iPad. On Mac you turn sync on in Klip Settings. On iPhone and iPad it is on by default, and you can turn it off in Klip Settings; your history then stays only on that device. Synced data is held by Apple under your Apple Account and the Apple Privacy Policy; the developer of Klip cannot access it. Images larger than 10 MB are never uploaded.
Link previews
Klip uses Apple's LinkPresentation framework to load the title and image of web pages you copy. This connects directly from your device to that website, just as opening the link in a browser would, so the website sees a normal visit. On Mac this happens when "Show link previews" is on in Settings. On iPhone and iPad it happens the first time a link clip without a preview is shown; usually your Mac has already loaded the preview and it arrives through iCloud. The title and image are saved with the clip, and sync with it if sync is on.
Update checks
On Mac, Klip checks for a newer version by downloading a small file, version.json, from this website: once a day while "Check for updates automatically" is on in Settings, and whenever you choose Check for Updates…. The request includes only Klip's version number, and like any website visit it shows your IP address to the site's host. Nothing about your clips is sent. Klip doesn't download or install updates by itself; it only offers to open the download page.
Permissions on Mac
- Accessibility: lets Klip paste the clip you choose into the app you're using, and, if enabled, turn three-finger clicks into middle clicks. Klip uses it only for these actions and does not record your keystrokes or screen.
- Files and folders: if you choose Import from Paste…, Klip reads a temporary copy of Paste's data on your Mac. Nothing is sent anywhere.
What Klip does not do
- No analytics, tracking, advertising or crash-reporting SDKs in the apps.
- No accounts and no sign-in.
- No selling or sharing of your data, and no use of it for advertising or tracking.
- No data is sent to the developer or to any third party other than Apple (for iCloud sync, if you use it) the websites you copy links from (for link previews), and this website (for update checks on Mac, which send only Klip's version number).
This website
This website uses Vercel Web Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and does not identify individual visitors. Downloading Klip from this site does not require any personal information. To count downloads, the site records when Klip for Mac was downloaded, which version it was, the country the request came from, and which page of this site the download link was on. It doesn't record your IP address or anything that identifies you.
Children
Klip is not directed at children. Because there are no Klip servers, the developer does not receive personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted on this page with a new date.
